  • 1.  Where are you in the org structure?

I am excited about this community. To get a feel for where we are and how we align, I would like to pose a series of questions.

    • Where are you in the Organizational Structure?
    • How many are on your team?
    • What do you predominantly work on? (IT Change, Org Design, Business Process Improvements, Transformation Initiatives, Other)

And I will answer my own questions:

    • Where are you in the Organizational Structure?
      • We are an internal team. Office of the COO, called Business Service Quality. We are in a recently merged university - UT Health San Antonio (post graduate medical, dental, nursing, public health, graduate school of biomedical science, health professions) with UT San Antonio (undergraduate/post graduate university). We are one of now 13 institutions in the University of Texas System .
    • How many are on your team?
      • We are 3 change management analyst and 2 training specialists.
    • What do you predominantly work on? (IT Change, Org Design, Business Process Improvements, Transformation Initiatives, Other)
      • We started in IT Change 11 years ago, we grew into Business Process Improvements and Transformation Initiatives, hence the change to Office of COO in 2024.

    Hi Barry,

Great questions to get a feel for how others are structured!

    • Where are you in the Organizational Structure?
      • Change Management is part of the Portfolio Management Team, which reports to the CIO
    • How many are on your team?
      • Dedicated to Change: 1.5 (Me and 50% of another person)
      • Full PfMO team: 12
    • What do you predominantly work on? (IT Change, Org Design, Business Process Improvements, Transformation Initiatives, Other)
      • IT Change

    Hi, Barry.

    Thanks for asking this question!

I am at a small liberal arts college, and we first started talking about change management as an actual function when we started a major software change more than 5 years ago (Workday financial and HR, for those who have been through it). We had a change management team led by an outside consultant who helped guide us through the readiness and implementation phases. Not really an ACMP Standard-driven process, but had a lot of the same components. I was asked to help with those efforts. As a result of that process, I asked for support to build this capacity. It's been a slow process, but I think leadership appreciates the importance of CM in transformative change.

    • Where are you in the Organizational Structure?
      • I report to the Treasurer/COO.
    • How many are on your team?
      • It's just me, and I'm not even 100% dedicated to change. There are individuals who do some change-related tasks (IT implementation, HR training, etc.), but no one does it full time.
    • What do you predominantly work on? (IT Change, Org Design, Business Process Improvements, Transformation Initiatives, Other)
      • I mostly work on organizational design and transformation initiatives, but I have been called in to consult on business process improvements and some IT change.

    Hi Barry -

Great questions! Our team was born of an ERP implementation some 12-14 years ago and then our current CIO realizing the value of change management wanted it at an enterprise level instead of limited to just our ERP and our team was re-orged to the division level where we sit now.

    • Where are you in the Organizational Structure?
      • I'm in our IT department, reporting up to our Vice Chancellor for Information Technology/CIO
    • How many are on your team?
      • I'm on our Project Portfolio and Change Management Team - there are 7 of us, including our director - 3 project managers and 3 change managers.
    • What do you predominantly work on? (IT Change, Org Design, Business Process Improvements, Transformation Initiatives, Other)
      • IT Change

Barry - These are such good questions.  Thanks for raising them.  I have many times seen Change Management being tied to either HR or IT.  In my case it was slightly different.

In the last fully change management role that I was in, I was working for a German-owned pharmaceutical company that had a US division.  There was one Change Management Lead (me) and I was in the Project Management Office (PMO) (under Commercial Operations - the support structure for the Sales Organization).  I was the first change lead that they ever had and we had 26 projects on the docket to complete in one year (because the company was getting ready to launch two new products (drugs) and they traditionally do a "drop everything and sell" strategy when launching new products.  Historically, this company had never finished projects on time or on budget.  This was my environment.  Obviously, it is not a good idea to have Project Management and Change Management be lead by two different people but we worked integrally and seamlessly together.  We did complete 25 of the 26 projects on time and on budget.  There were 3 Project Managers and me (the Change Lead). We covered the transformation projects (a few of which were IT projects) but most were restructuring of the org to a new alignment, Marketing Omnichannel- related, Assessment of a single device (computer vs. Ipad for the field Sales Force, moving to a mediation model vs. Lawyers being able to insitute class action suits (Legal), Revision of our Forecasting model, etc.

Some great accomplishments with limited resources, @Mary Sylvester! I get your environment complexity. My daughter is a Project Manager for a Phase 1 Clinical Trails company, first in-human clinical studies. We enjoy talking project and change management until the rest of the family is bored with us.
