Have you been able to successfully measure culture before the Day 1 of the Merger or Acquisition? If so, would love to hear about it.

    Hi Leslie

We have done culture assessments on two organizations prior to their merger. We used them to find both common and individual cultural strengths. We also used them to facilitate discussions with teams from both ends to shape the new culture and what would be beneficial or needed.

That is great! I wish more companies would see the value of that investment before the deal is completed. Thanks for sharing!

Mari - Thanks! What assessments do you use? are they custom assessments or something like Barrett or Human Synergistics? Just curious.

We have used spiral Dynamics, Dennison Culture as well as Barret's CTT  on separate occasions but one could use any cultural instrument that sparks conversation and dialogue.

I saw that people enjoyed speaking about what works or what they like about their culture that they'd like to keep.

Agree Mari! When you engage people prior to the ink drying on the M&A document, they are more willing to come along for the ride and provide valuable help in meshing the two companies. Change Management ROI in action!

We have been testing out some crosswalk exercises to map the culture of the acquisition to ours and it's been relatively helpful. Another thing I've done in the past is use Hofstede's approach to measuring culture to map similarities and differences. https://www.hofstede-insights.com/organisational-culture. It takes some of the emotion out of your analysis.

@Bethany Brannan this looks like really good material, thanks for sharing! I'm getting the PDF and am excited to see what I can apply to spruce up my assessment process.
